Release line in rampala tournament fishing for wii?

My son just dusted off this fishing game for the wii and is having tons of fun with it, but every time he gets a big fish on the line the line stress marker maxes out and the line breaks. The control info describes the A button as "hold/release/reel in line" but it only appears to reel in.
Anyone know how to ease the tension of the fishing line in this game?
