Can you go shark fishing almost anywhere there is saltwater?

Can you go shark fishing almost anywhere there is saltwater? And what is the best fishing gear you could use to catch the big boys. (I'll be fishing in a kayak in bays and the surf.)

No you can't in all areas. Usually Sharks are caught by-products of other fishing. However, if you specifically target Sharks, then you must check the fishing regs on the species of Shark. there are some Sharks that are Federally Protected and fishing for that species will land you in prison. Here on the West Coast of California, Great White Shark fishing has been banned since January 1, 1994. Decades ago it wasn't, but now it is.

Of course you'd be silly to fish for something that big in a Kayak. While Great White Sharks are normally Ocean side, I have hooked them inside of SF Bay in the deep channels up to 5 feet in length.

Yes basicy sharks will move into any saltwater body as long as if there is a ample food supply, for gear I recomend a Penn 4/0-6/0 senator or any reel similar in size spooled up with 50lb mono or 80lb braid if you prefer and a nice 20-40lb rod of your prefered size.

they could be in bays but i wouldnt recommend the bays, but the surf yes. I personally would not feel comfortable fishing for big game like that in a small kayak, but its up to you. First thing i would do is see what kind of sharks are most common in the area and what they eat. smooth dogfish might be common or great whites may be common but remember not all sharks are great whites, in fact mostcaught arent much bigger that 3 ft. But if your going for Bulls, Makos, tigers, hammerheads (which i wouldn't want to catch in a kayak) you would need a heavy duty rod like a Penn Shark Rod or maybe a heavy surf rod. If your going for duskys, sandbars, bonnetheads you could probably get away with using a very good quality medium heavy rod or a surf rod as well. For line i would recommend, for the big fish about 80-120 lb braid. For the smaller sharks i would go about 30-70 lb braid, and make sure u use a pretty strong steel leader so they dont cut it with thier teeth and they dont break it. If you google it their are hundreds of types of shark rigs, the most basic being probably a bottom rig (hook, leader, swivel, bead, weight, main line) when it comes to sharks i would say use dead bloody fish, and most the times for sharks the bigger the bait - the bigger hook - the bigger the fish - the heavier the tackle. Remember that and good luck. And for hooks for the big fish 10/0 and up... for the smaller ones 6/0 and up
